Quality

There have been some confusion over our video quality, here is what we have to say that we hope will clear the air.

The "source" on our title pages only indicates the file (or release) that we obtained (and encoded) to achieve the file that we upload. It has nothing to do with (asides being the actual source of) the upload.

A lot of people confuse video dimension as visual quality. A release being 2160p or 1080p does not always mean it has a better visual quality as a 720p (or lower) print. There are a lot of settings involved in encoding that determines the visual quality and output size of videos. These settings are what truly defines a "quality" video.

We can tweak these settings to achieve a 1080p video that has a poorer visual quality than a 720p (or lower). As such, a 1080p source can yield a 480p, 512p, 720p, 1020p, 1080p, or even upscaled to 1440p/2160p (bad idea).

At Awafim, we encode in different dimensions and try different encode settings for different releases. Sometimes, we encode a release up to 4 times with different settings/dimensions to achieve a (quality ÷ size) ratio that we feel will be acceptable to our visitors. Generally, it mostly comes out in 720p or 512p (as at writing this).

We will continue to work and follow new technologies, when we find a better format that we can work with, that yields a higher dimension (and/or quality) around our preferred output size, we will use that.

Thank you for reading, Ciao!
